Our Strategic Stakeholder Engagement services
At WesselinkVanZijst, we feel at home in complex societal issues across various fields of work. We operate according to the SSE method, developed by us and with the Mutual Gains Approach as its foundation. In this approach, we focus not on the outcome, but on the task at hand and the associated interests. Curious about our vision and method? Click here to read more.

SSE in Projects & Programs
Projects and programs are increasingly taking place in complex environments with high societal impact, limited room for maneuver, and many diverse interests. Those who underestimate this complexity often pay the price in delays or a stalled project. With SSE, we help clients get a grip on this complexity. We offer actionable strategies for dealing with resistance and conflict, building support, and fostering trust. Our experience shows that focusing on solutions that do justice to all interests leads to acceleration and reduces failure costs. Depending on the assignment, we fulfill the roles of environmental manager, program manager, project leader, or quartermaster.
Embedding a stakeholder oriented practice
Many strategic stakeholder professionals get bogged down by their own organization. They see what is needed but fail to get internal colleagues on board. Stakeholder orientation requires more than just the stakeholder manager: it requires the entire organization, including other departments, processes, and systems. We guide organizations in embedding stakeholder orientation. Together, we analyze the current situation and determine ambitions, objectives, and strategic choices. We act as facilitators and substantive sparring partners for the board, management, and employees. Our hands-on experience in the field makes us both strategic and practical experts on what is needed. Which is adaptive change, with an eye for diagnosis, development, and sustainable embedding.
Process Facilitation
The more parties disagree on how to approach a social issue, the more difficult it is to facilitate it neutrally. Especially when you represent one of the involved parties. Therefore, in complex dialogue processes and negotiations, we are asked to act as independent process facilitators. Without needing to pursue our own interests, we can fully focus on the process. We stand between the parties, serving the task and its participants. We help set direction, develop a process design, and work collaboratively on solutions with attention to content, decision-making, interrelationships, and stakeholder dynamics. We do this in negotiations between two or more parties, as well as in dialogue processes, participation meetings, and policy tasks.
From Analysis to Strategy (SSE-FATS)
Gaining a grip on your stakeholder landscape depends on good analysis and strategy. Yet, many stakeholder engagement professionals struggle to find enough time and guidance, or find it difficult in the face of a complex task. Our ‘From Analysis to Strategy’ model (SSE-FATS) brings structure and clarity to this complexity. In seven steps, we analyze how interests, trust, and power are interconnected and lead to certain behaviors. We then develop different scenarios and design a suitable stakeholder strategy and SSE-plan with scenario-specific interventions.
Joint Fact Finding
Increasingly, discussions are not about the truth, but about your truth. Parties draw from different sources, reach different conclusions, or simply dismiss research because they don't trust the initiator. This often leads to fact-checking debates about utility and necessity, the possible effects of measures, or the suitability of solutions. How do you agree on the facts in such situations? Joint Fact Finding (JFF) provides a solution. Witht JFF, not only the project initiators conduct research, but all stakeholders do so together. Under our independent guidance, we build a shared factual basis owned by all parties.
Coaching & Intervision
In addition to our work as trainers, we assist environmental professionals, managers, and employees through coaching and intervision. We help professionals, directors, and leaders develop their SSE skills, such as conducting analyses, formulating strategies, engaging in dialogue, and personal leadership. We achieve this through reflection, practical case studies, and personal guidance.
Mediation
Sometimes parties become so entangled in a conflict that they cannot resolve it without help. Tension rises and communication breaks down. Mediation can offer a solution: under the guidance of a neutral third party, you work on restoring dialogue to then arrive at solutions. As mediators, we are primarily involved in complex societal issues, where differing interests play a major role and often more than two parties are involved. In this context, we focus on various mediation forms: from the international level to governmental and intergovernmental mediation.
