The objective of SSE was to avoid unexpected stakeholder input, foster relationships, and look beyond solving today's problems.
For the Maasvlakte 2 Project Organization (Port of Rotterdam Authority), Marc Wesselink served as strategic stakeholder engagement professional for six years. In this role, Strategic Stakeholder Engagement (SSE) formed the basis for a sustainable dialogue with numerous community stakeholders, grounded in analyses of issues and stakeholders and a genuine interest in their interests. By engaging in dialogue early on and seeking common ground, space for consultation was created. From there, creative solutions were sought collaboratively. Initial successes bolstered confidence in the approach, and with that grew the conviction that solving problems and building a sustainable relationship can go hand in hand. SSE's commitment was to avoid unexpected stakeholder interference, to nurture relationships, and to look beyond solving today’s problems. The approach and results are described in the Strategic Stakeholder Engagement Manual (2010).
