During the Basic Training Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, you will be introduced to the basic principles and skills of the SSE method over three days. Through simulations, exercises, and peer coaching, you will learn how to recognize and reconcile interests as a professional in complex assignments. At the end of the training, you will know your own areas for development and which SSE interventions you can apply in your own work.

What you will do in the SSE Basic Training

In the Netherlands, much needs to be done. A wide range of stakeholders are affected by the tasks that governments, businesses, and civil society organizations are working on. This includes the physical space, the energy and water transition, policy changes in healthcare, the social domain, and security issues. How do you, as a professional, deal with a landscape of conflicting interests where tensions can run high and power may be used destructively? How do you prevent unnecessary surprises? And how do you find room for dialogue with the environment, both external and internal?

During the basic training Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, we offer you tools to deal with these challenges. SSE is a method for carefully managing stakeholders from a change initiative. In the training, you will learn what it entails and how you can apply it in your own work practice. In a varied program, we will focus on the four building blocks of SSE and go through the method step by step. Through interactive learning methods, you will experience the underlying vision of the Mutual Gains Approach yourself, learn about positions, interests, tension, power, and trust, and strengthen your analytical skills and negotiation skills.

Among other things, you will learn how to conduct a good stakeholder analysis of your own case and will be offered tools to translate the analysis into a strategy and specific skills. You will practice challenging conversation situations and gain insight into how to create added value for all parties during negotiations. This interactive and practical approach not only stimulates mutual knowledge exchange between participants and trainers but also provides you with more guidance in your own work practice.

Prior to and during the training, you will have access to our SSE learning platform, which offers various tools. You can use these tools in your own work after the training.

This training helped me shift my perspective on my stakeholder field. I have a better overview of the playing field, can prioritize better, and develop a stakeholder strategy based on good analysis.

The Basic SSE Training is developed for everyone involved in complex issues with many stakeholders. You're familiar with the vision behind the Mutual Gains Approach and Strategic Stakeholder Engagement (SSE);
You have familiarized yourself with all the steps of the SSE circle and some useful stakeholder tools;
You know how to perform an SSE analysis and how to conduct SSE discussions with stakeholders;
You have practiced negotiating in small settings and a large, multi-stakeholder case in which you discovered your own areas of improvement;
You know several intervention strategies and when to implement them;
You have more insight into an effective approach for your own case.
