Environmental management is about constructive conflict: appropriately clashing interests. However, we regularly find ourselves in conversations that are far from constructive. In this training, you will learn how to prepare yourself for such conversations and how to deal with tension and heightened emotions from your conversation partner during the conversation.
This training is offered exclusively in-company.
What you are going to do
Constructive conflict, the proper clashing of interests, is at the heart of the SOM field. After all, the SOM method aims to bring interests together as effectively as possible. The clashing of interests is therefore unavoidable. Due to time pressure or past events, this can be particularly challenging. Emotions among individual stakeholders can run high, and miscommunication quickly leads to a lack of trust.
How do we prevent conversations from becoming destructive and us falling into a downward spiral? What perspective do we have on how to act when it happens anyway? In this one-day training, you will learn how to effectively conduct exciting, challenging conversations and how to prepare yourself and your colleagues for them. We will also explore what you can do if you are caught off guard by a conversation that suddenly becomes challenging. We will practice a lot in a safe environment and learn from each other and each other's case studies. To make the exercises as realistic as possible, we will work with an experienced role-playing actor.
You do not need to have completed SOM Basis to participate in this training day.
For whom it is
This training is intended for colleagues who want to improve their skills in conducting challenging conversations, both externally and internally. For example, if you are a project leader, environmental manager, district or area director, communications advisor, program manager, policy officer, or strategic advisor, and you are involved in conversations in contexts with a lot of tension and emotions, then this practical training is for you.
What this training will give you
Upon completion of this training:
- Have you gained insight into how to handle challenging conversations, in recognizing behavior, what it does to you, and how to deal with it, both in preparation, during the conversations, and afterward?.
- Have you been introduced to and practiced a diverse spectrum of serious conversation techniques and effective behaviors.
- Do you and your colleagues have a shared language and tools (handles) for dealing with strongly negative sentiments?.
Why train at the SSE Academy of WesselinkVanZijst
At WesselinkVanZijst, we work on the complex societal challenges of the present day. Our trainers are therefore strongly embedded in the daily practice of SSE: they are involved in societal changes with high stakes, acting as strategic stakeholder engagement professionals, process facilitators, or negotiation experts. For the past fifteen years, our consultants have, in addition to guiding organizations and professionals through complex societal issues, trained 5,000 colleagues and are currently delivering around 100 training sessions annually in the Netherlands and abroad. For all our training courses, we utilize the didactic philosophy of the SSE Academy.
As developers of the SSE method, we are also actively involved in the further development of the field on a daily basis through publications and podcasts, among other things. In this, we work closely with our knowledge partners, including the Global Network of the Consensus Building Institute (CBI) and the Dutch Mutual Gains Network. In the Netherlands, we provide modules within training programs for the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the AOG School of Management.
